Case Study

BenefitConnect communication module and XIL transition groundwork

How Connexure extended BenefitConnect with a communication module and integration work that informed the later move toward XIL.

Connexure

Our Client

BenefitConnect is one of Connexure's key products, used by brokers and insurers to manage stop-loss proposals, RFPs, and secure communication. Clever Grapes worked inside the existing product to deliver a communication module while Connexure's broader product direction was evolving.

The Challenge

BenefitConnect needed better communication workflows while the product direction was evolving.

Connexure needed to improve communication between brokers, partners, and internal workflows inside the existing BenefitConnect product. At the same time, the business was evaluating a more API-first model that would later become XIL, allowing partners to submit requests without relying on the BenefitConnect UI.

Active product context

BenefitConnect remained in active use, so changes had to fit the existing product and user workflows.

Communication module

The work focused on adding communication capability rather than completing a full platform rewrite.

Evolving direction

The team needed implementation work that could support immediate product needs and inform future architecture decisions.

Partner request flow

Connexure was moving toward a model where partners could submit requests directly through APIs.

The Solution

Communication module and XIL groundwork

Clever Grapes delivered a communication module integrated into the existing BenefitConnect platform. The work supported partner communication flows and created architectural learning that later contributed to the decision to prioritize XIL, where partners could submit requests through APIs instead of relying on the BenefitConnect UI.

BenefitConnect communication module and XIL transition diagram

Delivered module

Built and integrated a communication module inside the existing BenefitConnect platform.

Existing product integration

Connected the new capability with BenefitConnect workflows without requiring a full product replacement.

Partner communication

Supported communication flows between brokers, partners, and Connexure's operational processes.

XIL direction

The work helped clarify the need for an API-first communication layer that later became the priority for XIL.

Business Outcomes

Delivered module

A communication module was built and integrated with the existing BenefitConnect platform.

Business direction clarified

The work helped validate the need for a more API-first partner communication model.

Foundation for XIL

Connexure later shifted priority toward XIL to let partners submit requests directly, while BenefitConnect remained in active use.
